They give calcium supplements to horses The need for calcium supplements is recognised by horse breeders. The following information was found on the Cyberhorse website and details different levels of calcium required for different horses for optimal performance. The amounts given would be maintenance levels and designed to prevent bone loss. Once bone loss has occurred it would probably be a different story. Note the amounts given for horses vary between 30 grams to 160 grams per day. Admittedly, a horse is a bigger animal than a man, but when you consider the RDA for humans is somewhere around 1 gram to 1.2 grams a day, it makes you wonder.

If they don't, they must "borrow" what they need from their bones, depleting reserves of this essential nutrient. Calcium deficiency in young horses causes them to grow with weak thin bones, whereas older horses can suffer from brittle bones and lameness.
