08 Holding Together (Union)
Alliencing, Uniting

In a context of devotion we utilise control

"PI : order things and put them in classes, compare and select; find what you belong with; compare, sort, examine correspondances; select and harmonize; unite. The ideogram: person who stops walking, looking around to examine and compare."ERANOS p160

"[With devotion comes overcoming(control)]: Unity. In primitive times one created many cities to connect the provinces.[And thus unite the state.]"

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 08 one is influencial by one's presence in that one attracts people from all around and establishes a sense of unity. Thus the contextual emphasis on augmentation and distinguishing chaff from wheat.

Oppositional format : In hexagram 08 control is against darkness.

Template/Persona type: Contractive Bounding in a context of Contractive Blending. The blend emphasis is on devotion whereas the bound emphasis is on establishing control; forming a group based on devotion.

Five-Phase Relationship : The trigram of Earth reflects the process of Filtration through faith. The trigram of Water reflects the process of Consumption. Consumption within a context of faith is reflected in spiritual 'consumption' through joining a select group.

Hexagram 08 is the specific form of hexagram 30

Goal of 08 - hexagram 34 (or 'how do I 34? - 08' - How do I motivate/invigorate? through unity)

08 is the goal of 03 (or 'how do I 08? - 03' - How do I unify? through sprouting, something 'new')

Extended Commentary

The raw context from which this situation derives is described through analogy with hexagram 20. The raw base line expressions is described by analogy with 42 Augmenting. This general emphasis of improving is linked to the base line of hexagram 08. The development path moves up through the hexagram passing through line position 5 and its link to hexagram 23 - Pruning which reflects the developing emphasis on focusing on a center that is expressed in hexagram 08.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1
"To be capable of unity requires sincerity. This may be all one has at the start."
Line 2
"The desire for unity must come from the heart not from the mind, as may be found in an opportunist."
Line 3
"There are times when we attract the wrong people. Be sociable but not intimate."
Line 4
"One's firm relationship with outside people is tested. A favourable result." In ordering the unfamiliar, in uniting things, setting a sense of 'belonging', one must possess the unfamilar, encapsulate it, and through firm actions ensure all you get into the group is the 'wheat'. This action will be to one's advantage.
Line 5
"A wise and receptive [trusting] ruler. Those who come and are suited stay. Those who wish to, can leave. These options are controlled by the people rather than the ruler."
Line 6
"Without a solid centre of attraction (head), unity fails. There is no 'completion' in that things end through dispersion; Blown away in the wind."

Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 20. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 20 as context.

The emphasis is that a context of uniting people with an emphasis on a group based on devotion leads to the emergence of a sense of admiration. Reciprocally, admiration of someone/something leads to a developing attraction to the perspective of that someone or something.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 07 reflects an influence of 08 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 08 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 08.
