05 Waiting (Nourishment)
Waiting, Serving

In a context of perseverence we utilise control.

"HSU : take care of, look out for, serve; turn your mind to what is necessary; wait, await, wait on; hesitate, doubt; obstinate, fixed. The ideogram: rain and stop, compelled to wait, or rain and origin, providing what is needed"ERANOS p133

Image :

"[With perseverence comes overcoming(control)]. Clouds above relate to heaven: FORCED WAITING. One finds peace of mind in eating and drinking."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 05 the goal is to eventually be the active leader(14). However, when danger exists (one's 'moment' has not yet come) one needs to keep one's balance by bidding one's time and let external events follow their course; serving and cultivating as we wait.

Oppositional format : water against light.

Template/Persona format : Contractive bounding in a context of expansive blending. Control in a context of perseverence.

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (through opposition, competition). The trigram of Water reflects Consumption. Exchange through consumption is expressed as waiting, serving one's dues, making social connections ('eating and drinking').

Hexagram 05 is the particular of hexagram 64 where the general emphasis on remaining open, avoiding completion, is expressed in the particular behaviour of waiting; of serving ones dues.

Goal of 05 - hexagram 48 (or 'how do I 48? - 05' How do I set down foundations? By cultivating useful connections for the future)

05 is the goal of 45 (or 'how do I 05? - 45' How do I cultivate useful connections? In a positive crowd, a celebrating crowd)

Extended Commentary

The raw context from which this situation derives is described by hexagram 09 (make small gains). The raw nature of the base line position is desxcribed by analogy with hexagram 57 Influencing/Cultivating. It passes through hexagram 26 Holding Firm before finding its fullest expression in hexagram 05.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1
"Waiting on the periphery. Advantageous to continue in this way. No harm. OR Waiting on the periphery. Not offering any opposition at all but sticking to one's principles. Advantageous to continue in this way. No harm."
Line 2
"Waiting on the shoreline. Although slandered by others, one will eventually gain a foothold."
Line 3
"One has jumped the gun and attempted to advance too far. One has become stuck (bogged down). This helplessness attracts enemies - Did no wait long enough."
Line 4
"One has stuck around too long and has lost control of the situation - Waited too long."
Line 5
"One waits by enjoying the moment with drink. A testing time, but appropriate."
Line 6
"At the top waiting is over. A time of danger. But people come. Their purpose ill defined but if accepted in good spirit all will be well - No more time to wait."
Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 09. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 09 as context.

Introducing a context of calculated waiting and serving ones dues leads to the expression of making small gains. Reciprocally a context of making small gains leads to the expression of calculated waiting.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 06 reflects an influence of 05 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 05 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 05.
