52 Keeping Still, Mountain
Self-Restraining, Discerning, Blocking
In a context of self-restraint we utilise discernment.

"KEN : limit, boundary; encounter an obstacle, stop; still, quiet, motionless; confine, enclose, mark off; turn around to look behind; hard, adamant, obstinate; perverse. The ideogram: eye and person turning around to compare and group what is behind."ERANOS p559

"[With self-restraint comes discernment] : Keeping Still. One uses pondering to avoid moving from one's position."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

In hexagram 52 satisfaction is attained through internal meditation. But be warned not to become spiritually indulgent - one must be selective. The submission here is to one's self; an act of self-restraint and retaining the inner; to be discerning. Traditionally there is a material/spritual gateway here - Numbing the senses leaves only the mind open.

Hexagram 52 is the specific form of 17

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Mountain reflect Filtration-through-discernment. The focus of discernment is its roots on self-restraint, on blocking, on stopping. From this process of stopping so we 'group' things by qualities and become discerning in filtering.

Goal of 52 - hexagram 41 (or 'how do I 41? - 52')

52 is the goal of 22 (or 'how do I 52? - 22' How do I be discerning? express quality? By facading, adding more to something to make it reflect 'quality' (beauty etc) - also How do I block things? By glossing over things)

Extended Commentary

The raw context from which the situation derives is described by hexagram 15. The basic nature of the base line position is described by analogy with hexagram 36 Uncompromising. It passes through hexagram 39 Obstructing before reaching here.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1 -
"Restraining one's feet. No harm in this. Perpetually testing times but advantageous." [Self impose limitation (wanderer/feet)]
Line 2 -
"Restraining one's calves. Not rescuing one's belief. One's heart is sad." [Foregoing development]
Line 3 -
"Restraining, one's limit and assigns it to one's hips/loins. Danger suffocates the heart." [One attempts to consciously practice restraint through (sexual?) modesty]
Line 4 -
"Restraining[Retaining] one's individuality. No harm in this." [Put on a facade]
Line 5 -
"Restraining[being selective] one's words. Previous troubles disappear." [Correcting past(and future) deeds]
Line 6 -
"Generous restraint[Retainment], favourable." [Stick to the basics (prune)]
Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 15. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 15 as context.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 52 reflects an influence of 52 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 52 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 52.
