10 Treading (Conduct)
|
"[With self-reflection comes singlemindedness] [Forced reflection]: Treading. One differentiates the highs and lows, with the purpose of setting right the common people."
Class: Differentiating
In hexagram 10 one is in a position which requires decorum and the following of the socially 'correct' path. This is not a time for deferring but more of submitting to the situation through a degree of balance (decorum/proper conduct) without moving from one's personal position nor making one's desires apparent; forced reflection whilst we walk in the confines of our environment (thus the context of 47 - the enclosure of a tree 'drives' the roots deep and so one becomes bound and difficult to move beyond one's 'place' - There is a lot of wasted energy).
(Note that the restraint is externally imposed whereas in this hexagram's complement , hexagram 15, the restraint is internally imposed (words+facts). As hexagram 15 reflects levelling-out highs and lows, do 10 reflects the hierarchy that comes from clearly maintaining highs and lows where each person needs to 'know their place' or else the whole system can collapse.)
Hexagram 10 is the specific form of hexagram 46
Goal of 10 - hexagram 06 (or 'how do I 06? - 10' - the act of compromise requires treading a careful path)
Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (through cooperation). The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (through competition/opposition). The relationship is expressed as having to walk a 'fine line' between cooperation and opposition.
10 is the goal of 33 (or 'how do I 10? - 33' How do I follow the 'correct' path? Through being drawn-in (the path ahead forces you to be drawn in - as you follow the path so you become more commited))
The raw context is 58, the raw line context from which the situation derives is described by hexagram 47 Confining/Enforced Waiting. It passes through hexagram 54 Immaturing before reaching here.

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 58. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 58 as context.
It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.
To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 43 reflects an influence of 10 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 10 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 10.
