01 The Creative, Heaven
Assertion (Single-Mindedness, Self-contained, totalising)
In a context of perseverence we utilise singlemindedness.
"CH'IEN: spirit power, creative
and destructive; unceasing forward motion; dynamic, enduring, untiring;
firm, stable; heaven, soverign, father; also: dry-up, parched, exhausted,
cleared away. The ideogram: sprouts or vapors rising from the ground and
sunlight, both fecundating moisture and scortching drought."

Trigrams
: perseverence (bottom), singlemindedness (top) : with/from perseverence
comes singlemindedness. [heaven over heaven]
The mud
from which 01 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated
qualities of hexagram
28, excess, too much yang.
As a marker of context, where context acts to PUSH instincts, 01 'demands'
a preferred response of the qualities of 01.
- In
the binary sequence of the I Ching hexagram 01 pairs with hexagram 43.
-
The pairing of 01 and 43 reflect the
subtle differences in expression of 'yangness' where the differentiating
focus of 01, where we make the point of the totality of yangness, is complemented
by the integrating focus of 43 where the emphasis is on 'spreading the
word', sowing the seed, and doing that in a 'pushy' manner. Thus we have
the integrating and differentiating examples of pure yang.
- In
the binary sequence hexagram 01 opposes hexagram 02.
-
This paring of 01 and 02 reflect the
total opposition of yangness, of pure differentiation, to the total yinness
reflected in pure integration. The originating binary sequence of the
I Ching, based on recursion of the concepts of yin and yang, reflects
a scale of a relationship of yin/yang where the scale is local at the
level of immediate pairs (as in 43/01) and global at the level of distant
pairs (as in linking one pole of the sequence, hexagram 02, with the other,
hexagram 01). The main distinctions in the 01/02 pair are on the precision
of yang, where the unit of measure is a point, and so the ONE, with the
approximation in precision of yin, where the unit of measure is always
two points, and so a PAIR. We thus see the differences of yin and yang
at the level of the human psyche as that between single-mindedness
(pure yang - total faith in self) and dual-mindedness (pure yin
- total faith in another/others).
At the LOCAL level we are dealing
with an octet of hexagrams with the HEAVEN trigram as base. In this sequence
hexagram 01, the singlemindedness, exaggerations-prone nature of yangness,
'opposes' hexagram 11, the focus on maintaining balance and harmony and
as such the hard core, sharp distinction of, differentiation nature of
01 is reflected in a more balanced format by the integration nature of
11.
- In
the traditional sequence hexagram 01 pairs with hexagram 02.
-
This
pairing of 01/02 reflects the local differences of pure/mixed expression
where at the level of pure expression, as reflected in the PAIRING of
the two symbols of yin/yang purity, hexagram 02 is more 'biased' to being
interpretable as being a little 'mixed', a little 'softer' in purity,
than the absolute purity in expression of hexagram 01.
01 : purity, mindedness - through
singlemindedness (total trust in self) 01 purity comes out of a context
described by hexagram 28 - excess (too much yang)
02 : purity, mindedness - through dualmindedness (total trust in another/others)
02 purity comes out of a context described by hexagram 27 - hungering
(too little yang)
- In
the traditional sequence hexagram 01 opposes hexagram 64.
-
This pairing of 01/64 reflects the absolute
differences between pure/individual expression and mixed/group expression.
As such, when compared to hexagram 01, hexagram 64 reflects incompleteness
but also the benefits of remaining open and the overall sense of 'groupness',
and so of mixing (reflected in the yin/yang line orderings as well).
- The
generic properties of hexagram 01 reflect the mixing of the generic properties
of hexagram
43 with the generic properties
of hexagram
28.
-
Hexagram
43, in its rawest form of expression, reflects a sense of being 'pushy',
as is required when one is focused on 'spreading the word'. Hexagram
28 deals with the concept of excess, here interpretable as 'too much yang'.
Thus being focused on spreading the word combined with a focus on excess
reflects the overall extreme nature, the totalism, of hexagram 01.
- In
the variation on a theme sequence, hexagram 01 complements hexagram 44.
-
The pairing of hexagram 01 and 44 reflects
the subtle differences in expression focused on the base line of a trigram.
Here the 'rigidity' of yangness, as expressed in hexagram 01, is 'softened'
at a general level to be reflected in the focus of hexagram 44 on seducation
and so the need for persuation to achieve one's goal. In pure yangness
there is no such need where the natural leadership skills reflected in
01 elicit immediate respect.

Changing Lines
The interpretations here are based
on considering a hexagram as an archetypal image and so prone to 'exaggerations'
that attempt to take one away from the archetypal expression. Thus the
line comments are in the form of warnings where the combination of lines
reflects being drawn towards an expression reflected in the completion
of the line change. We recognise here that the roots of the 64 hexagrams
are in fact 4096 dodecagrams (12-line symbols) where each dodecagram reflects
a specific state of hexagram and changing lines. A particular dodecagram
is expressed in the form of a hexagram with changing lines and as such
is different to the dodecagram reflecting the hexagram stemming from the
completion of the change, in other words the change itself is a state
of 'being'.
The overall focus here is on 'shape-shifting'
where the core element, the archetype hexagram, is 'dressed-up' in clothes
derived from another hexagram, reflecting a distortion away from the 'correct'
path. Since there are 4096 possible expressions and only 64 'static' hexagrams
so this 'shape-shifting' is common, reflecting the need of an archetype
to adapt to context, to shape-shift and in doing so retaining its core
sense of NOT changing.
- Line 0 [00] {NO changing lines}
-
- Line 1 [01]
-
"Although having potential, one
must must lie low (hidden) for now."
The focus here is on the seductive/persuasive element of hexagram 44
where we are tempted to express our yangness too soon. The universal relationship
here is that between 09 as context, as stimulus, and 44 as response; the
making of 'small gains' prefers a response in the form of being seductive/persuasive
and as such make those gains. In the middle of this universal comes you,
the local condition of perseverence doubled - singlemindedness. The context
is the source of PUSH on your local condition and, given time, will FORCE
you to change into what the context wants in response - 44.
If you choose to fit into this context, then do nothing in that
staying in the context will force 01 to change into 44. To stay on the
path of working through the qualities of hexagram 01, in this particular
situation you need to adopt the characteristics of hexagram 16 - at our
current position we need to focus on enthusiastic planning/preparation
for our future development and so do as the line comment suggest - lie
low for now, plan ;-)
-
Line 2 [02]
-
"One is noticed, but to go further
it would be advisable to get some guidance."
being noticed means a developing relationship with those of 'likemindedness',
as reflected in hexagram 13. Be wary of getting too involved too soon,
seek guidance. The universal relationship here is between a context of
hexagram 14 preferring a response of hexagram 13. Into this dynamic has
come you, expressing singlemindedness.
If you choose to fit into this context, do nothing, given time you
will change into the response (13). OR you can speed up the adaptation
by taking on the characteristics of 13. OR you need to move on in the
journey through hexagram 01 by neutralising the change through adapting
the nature of hexagram 08.
Lines 1 & 2 [03]
-
The
sincerity of singlemindedness is still developing such that one may try
trickary (or be drawn in) (hexagram 33) to further oneself. Dont be so
hasty; the universal relationship here is a context of hexagram 26, and
so the PUSH, eliciting the preferred response of 33. Into the middle of
this dynamic ("HEAVEN-EARTH") comes you ("MAN") in
the form of hexagram 01. Stay around in the context and you will change
into 33 - so if you like that, then either do nothing and you will change
over time, OR adopt the nature of 33 immediately to adapt to the context.
Otherwise you need to move on in your journey through 01 by adopting the
temporary nature of hexagram 19.
-
Line 3 [04]
-
"One must be wary of being awed
by one's own power. This perception can be extremely destructive and must
be exorcised. No harm."
As one develop's one's power so the awareness of hierarchy and the
sense of 'everyone has there place' emerges and so the need to mark-out
one's position (hexagram 10). Do not exaggerate one's place too soon.
The stimulus-response nature of HEAVEN-EARTH is of hexagram 43 as context,
as the stimulus, demanding hexagram 10 as response. Into the middle of
this comes singlemindedness. The influence of the context on singlemindedness
is to force a change into the characteristics of hexagram 10 - to follow
a path rigidly; this act 'satisfies' the context that is focused on spreading
the word, the one true 'faith' - and so a devotion to 'self'.
To neutralise the context one needs to introduce a limited degree
of the characteristics of hexagram 15, modesty, level things out, remove
highs, fill in the lows. To follow the 'push' either (a) do nothing as
you will change or (b) speed up the change by adopting the characteristics
of 10.
-
Lines 1 & 3 [05]
-
With
a focus on developing singlemindedness there are times when one is tempted
to compromise (hexagram 06). Dont. The HEAVEN-EARTH dynamic is of hexagram
05 (calculated waiting) as context 'demanding' hexagram 06 (compromise)
as preferred response; into the middle of this walks MAN as hexagram 01.
Thus the flow is in waiting for one's 'moment' to come, and in that waiting
making 'connections', and the response is to focus on having to make compromises.
- Lines 2 & 3 [06]
-
When
developing singlemindedness one can be tempted to asserting one's position
regardless of consequence (hexagram 25). Too soon. The HEAVEN-EARTH dynamic
is of hexagram 34 (invigoration) as context eliciting a preferred response
of hexagam 25. Into the middle of this comes MAN (you) as 01.
- Lines 1 & 2 & 3 [07]
-
When
developing singlemindedness one may be tempted to engage others (hexagram
12) in defence of one's beliefs too soon. The HEAVEN-EARTH dynamic is
of a context of hexagram 12 eliciting a response of 11.
-
Line 4 [08]
-
"If one enjoys oneself in a
seductive environment, no harm." The HEAVEN-EARTH dynamic is
of a context of 44 demanding a response of 09. Thus a context of being
persuasive/seductive elicits a response of making small gains. Into the
middle of this walks you as hexagram 01.
- Lines 1 & 4 [09]
-

identity.
