Goals & Outcomes - The Vertical Sequence of the I Ching

(Copyright © 2002 C.J. Lofting)

The vertically derived sequence of the I Ching is a source of identifying goals/outcomes of hexagrams. This sequence was derived using hexagram 01 as the 'source' where we work through the set of 64 possible line change states, moving from the 'changeless' of 01, through the first line change giving us hex 44 to the last line change of ALL lines giving us hexagram 02. As such the binary number ordering is bottom-to-top.

This sequence of 64 hexagrams associated with hexagram 01 line changes is ordered below into rows of eight from 'top' (all lines change) to 'bottom' (no lines change). Analysis of this sequence shows a 'goals/outcome' perspective encoded in the sequence and these have all been explicitly identified below the following diagram with links for further analysis. (there is another format for hexagram 01 giving other details as well - see here - but I have left those details out here to emphasise the vertical sequence only)

In all of the other hexagrams we have the same sequence but it 'rotates' with a different start position for each hexagram.

Here is the full sequence with comments where we work backwards using the "How do I X" method.

02 - this hexagram represents the notions of devotion to, and so total trust in, another/others. The question here is "How do I experience the essence of total devotion?". The answer is in the behaviour expressed in hexagram 24.

24 - this hexagram represents the returning to the one 'true' path; it details the distractions down other paths and the pulling back from those paths to return to the 'one' path. This process is an example of pure devotion as reflected in 02.
