Five-Phase and the I Ching - METAL | EXCHANGE | LUNGS

The nature of exchange is represented in the I Ching in the trigrams of Lake and Heaven. Exchange is controlled by Distribution and controls Production. It is supported by Filtration and supports Consumption.

The phase of metal emphasises exchange in two forms, expressed in the trigrams of Lake and Heaven, both of which emphasise the more generic quality for these trigrams - that of replacement (linked to the IDM concept of the Transcendence Function and identified in the source of the human emotions of Anger and Love, aggression and reproduction - both acts of replacement - see the page on IDM and emotions)

The focus of Lake is more 'social', more cooperative exchange, the focus of Heaven is more 'antagonistic' at times ("[God] battles in the sign of the Creative") and so more prone to competitive exchange. [Help in understanding hexagram layouts].

The realm of exchange is the realm of such concepts as 'game theory' and basic concepts in economics where the dynamics of exchange are in the interactions of cooperative and competitive perspectives.

The hexagrams of METAL, within the trigram of Lake, are (in five-phase, sheng cycle, order):

Hexagram 54 reflects production in the context of exchange. This is specifically expressed as an exaggerated use of energy, at times a waste in energy, to get things 'moving' -

The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (Through cooperation). The trigram of Thunder reflects Production (something 'new', 'sudden'). The relationship is expresses immaturity, sudden release of energy, over-exaggerated.

Hexagram 61 reflects a developing production in the context of exchange. This is in the form of an increased sense of sympathy/empathy for another/others and so become supportive of their cause, for its development -

The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (through cooperation). The trigram of Wind reflects Production (through re-production, cultivation). The relationship is expressed as cultivation within cooperative exchange reflects emphathising, sympathising.

Hexagram 38 reflects the concept of distribution in the context of exchange. This hexagram identifies dealing with oppositions through 'mirroring', letting then see themselves 'in' you and so facilitate exchange regardless of one's personal perspectives - hidden behind the 'mirror' -

The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (cooperative). The trigram of Fire reflects Distribution. Cooperative Exchange through Distribution is expressed as 'mirroring' - to deal with opposition one 'reflects' others and so they see you as if themselves.

Hexagram 19 reflects the concept of filtering in the context of exchange. The focus is on (a) the low being prepared to approach the high and (b) the high being prepared to 'defer' to the low. This dampening of fear as well as of a sense of being superior, facilitates exchange -

Hexagram 41 continues the theme of filtering in the context of exchange where this hexagram emphasises distillation, concentration, and so the use of filtering to focus on purity in exchange (The traditional texts more often label this hexagram as 'Decrease' as if a negative act. The focus is more on decrease in the form of distillation) -

The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange (by opposition, competition). The trigram of Earth reflects Filtration (through belief, given rules). Exchange through Filtration is here expressed as being 'balancing', 'harmonising'.

The overall focus in METAL is on the 'soft' metal of Lake interactions vs the 'hard' metal of Heaven interactions.
