19 Approach
|
"[With self-reflection comes trust] : [Deference] Above a marsh there is earth : Approach. To reflect, one uses teaching exhaustively. To protect the common people, one uses unbounded tolerance."
Class: Integrating
Cooperative Format : In hexagram 19 we find a time of deference for the high(top trigram) and a time of easy approach for the low(bottom trigram); not a time for the high to stand one's ground even if appearing 'balanced' . The 'high' is generous and aids and teaches the low. Hexagram 19 is the specific of hexagram 44. where 44 deals with general seduction and persuation as compared to 19 with its specific intent on approaching the high and getting them to 'empathise'.
(There is a very obvious difference in lines 1-3 and lines 4-6 when we read the traditional line comments (see below). Lines 1-3 are bias to those approaching, whereas lines 4-6 are bias to those deferring. The traditional name of the hexagram is bias to the lower trigram.).
Oppositional format : Hexagram 19 manifests being drawn into darkness; the observed deferring of the high to the low is a trick; the tiger WILL bite but in its own time.
Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 19 is the opposite of hexagram 33 in that 19 reflects approach as compared to withdrawal; sincere openness and deference as compared to trickary; drawing you out as compared to drawing you in.
Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 19 is hexagram 07 (or 'how do I 07? - 19' How do I develop uniformity? - get the high to defer to the low; get the low to dare to approach the high)
Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Lake reflects Exchange (through cooperation). The trigram of Earth reflects Filtration (through faith). The focus is on faith in cooperative exchange - a focus on high defering to low, low approaching the high.
19 is the goal of 15 (or 'how do I 19? - 15 - How do I develop deference/approach? Focus on reducing highs and lows, on levelling things, evening-out)
Referring to the Quality Matrix below, the raw context from which hexagram 19 derives is described by analogy with hexagram 41, reflecting a general sense of concentration, of purpose. Once within hexagram 19, the base level is described by analogy with the general nature of hexagram 04, Masking, in that hexagram 04 is linked to the bottom line of hexagram 19 and expresses the general focus upon approaching the 'high' as a student approaches a teacher . The development path of qualitative expression works up through the lines of hexagram 19 where at line 5 it is best expressed by analogy to hexagram 61, Yielding, where the intent of the development is to yield, to sympathise, to the approach. This sympathising is finally transformed at the peak of the hexagram, line 6, into the expression of the low approaching the high without fear.

At worst, hexagram 19 expresses itself in a manner analogous to hexagram 41, concentration, and at best hexagram expresses itself in a manner analogous to hexagram 31 (intense stimulation, wooing). The Dynamic elements start from hexagram 07 to hexagram 31 - the begin/end of the string of hexagrams following the position of hexagram 19 in the above Quality Matrix, thus DYNAMICALLY the 'worst' 19 can do is expressed by analogy to hexagram 07, the best by analogy to hexagram 31. Overall, hexagram 31 reflects 19 in its 'best' state, combining static with dynamic.
By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 41. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 41 as context.
The emphasis here is that introducing a context of approach allows for the emergence of concentration. Recipricolly, introducing a context of concentrating leads to approaches being made.
It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.
To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 45 reflects an influence of 19 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 19 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 19.
