46 Pushing Upward
|
"[With cultivation comes trust : Involvement]. One uses flexability to follow one's way and small accomplishments to build great things."
Class: Integrating
Cooperative Format : In hexagram 46, through the conversion of small potentials into actuals, one has risen to a point of recognition. All of this achieved by willpower and innocence; acts of deep-seated involvement to the exclusion of everything else. This is the process of refinement; the act of distillation rather than the product itself. Contextually, we have held firm and cultivated leading to ascending and entanglement. Hexagram 46 is the general form of hexagram 10
Oppositional Format : Hexagram 46 manifests cultivating the dark.
Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 46 is the opposite of hexagram 25, in that 46 reflects entanglement as compared to disentanglement; lost innocense as compared to innocense; keeping 'mum' as compared to saying what needs to be said.
Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 46 is hexagram 36 (or 'how do I 36? - 46' How do I be uncompromising? get involved more, move up a level, 'push')
Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Wind reflects Production (manufactured, reproduction). The trigram of Earth reflects Filtration (through belief, given rules). The focus on increased entanglement reflects a 'rise in office' and so a process of refinement.
46 is the goal of 11 (or 'how do I 46? - 11' How do I get involved, get entangled, move up? Harmonise and Balance things)
Referring to the Quality Matrix below, the raw context from which hexagram 46 derives is described by analogy with hexagram 18 where the under-exaggerated focus is on correcting 'something', becoming more involved. Once within hexagram 46, the base level is described by analogy with the general nature of hexagram 26, Holding Firm, in that hexagram 26 is linked to the bottom line of hexagram 46 and expresses the general concept of strengthening belief. The development path of qualitative expression works up through the lines of hexagram 46 where at line 5 it is best expressed by analogy to hexagram 57, cultivating and becoming influencial and so becoming more entangled with things. This 'entanglement' need is finally transformed at the peak of the hexagram, line 6, into the expression of becoming more entangled, of 'pushing upwards'.

At worst, hexagram 46 is reflected by analogy to an under-exaggeration of hexagram 18, at best hexagram 46 is reflected by analogy to an over-exaggerated 17 - the focus on belief.
By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 18. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 18 as context.
The emphasis here is setting the context as the act of getting involved is required prior to removing corruptions; correcting the past mistakes. Reciprocally, an emphasis on correcting mistakes leads to the emergence of entanglement, of getting involved rather than participating in one form of corruption -- neglect, declaring non-involvement and so hopefully avoiding any 'mud'.
It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.
To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 20 reflects an influence of 46 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 46 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 46.
