51 The Arousing, Thunder
Enlightenment, Awareness

In a context of enlightenment, a new beginning, we utilise (sudden) awareness.

"CHEN : arouse, excite, inspire; thunder rising from below; awe, alarm, trembling; fertilizing intrusion. The ideogram: excite and rain." ERANOS p550

"[With enlightenment comes awareness : Arousing] One uses anxiety and fear to regulate watchfulness."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 51 we are at the explicit moment when one detects a transition from stillness to movement. An arousing influence that inspires one to action. In the image, the feelings of anxiety and fear are enhanced in the people by the powers that be, such that any change in the environment will trigger these emotions and the change is thus quickly detected. Contextually, we combine inspiration with disentanglement (independence) to get a moment of enlightenment and awareness.

In the senses world arrangement this hexagram becomes the beginning as well as symbolizing birth. Hexagram 51 deals with a sense of beginning, newness and is the general form of an emphasis on particular, gradual development as described by hexagram 53

Oppositional format : hexagram 51 reflects thunder doubled.

Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 51 is the opposite of hexagram 57 in that 51 reflects enlightenment/awareness as as BEGINNING state, whereas 57 reflects the results of cultivation and becoming influencial and so a more ENDING state. As such 51 is more 'in your face' regarding change - it is sudden and immediate whereas 57 is like the wind and can 'sneak up' upon you, reflecting change in context that forces change in the individual - the focus in 51 is more confronting, reflecting a sudden thundering rather than a gentle wind that is rising.

Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 51 is hexagram 16 (or 'how do I 16? - 51' - how do I plan, forsee? through awareness of all possibilities, 'new' insights)

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Thunder reflects raw Production. The focus is on a raw/new product - be it an idea or thing 'suddenly' coming into being.

51 is the goal of 40 (or 'how do I 51? - 40' How do I become 'enlightened/aware'? through the 'sudden' release of tensions)

Extended Commentary

Referring to the Quality Matrix below, the raw context from which hexagram 51 derives is described by analogy with the under-exaggerated nature of hexagram 21, the, focus upon 'problem solving', seeking 'clarity'. Once within hexagram 51, base level is described by analogy with the general nature of hexagram 35, bringing something into the 'light' and so progressing in that hexagram 35 is linked to the bottom line of hexagram 51. The development path of qualitative expression works up through the lines of hexagram 51 where at line 5 it is best expressed by analogy to hexagram 25 Disentangling, where the intent of the development is to break free of current constraints to assert a 'new' perspective. This 'assertion of the new' need is finally transformed at the peak of the hexagram, line 6, into the expression of enlightenment/awareness.

Referring to the Quality Matrix in column 2 above, the worst that hexagram 51 can do is reflected by analogy to the under-exaggerated qualities of hexagram 21 - Problem solve. The best that hexagram 51 can do is reflected by analogy to the over-exaggerated qualities of hexagram 48 - Setting Foundations for development.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1 -
"Thunder: coming, frightening, frightening. After laughing words comes shrieking. Propitious." [Return]
Line 2 -
"[When sudden adversity robes one of one's wealth. Do not pursue it. It will come back.]" [Have faith(belief). This alone will help to restore things]
Line 3 -
"Thunder: Revives all. Thunder moves without mistake." [it follows natural laws]
Line 4 -
"Thunder: releasing the bog." [Helps to get things moving, unsticks]
Line 5 -
"Thunder: going and coming. danger. However one loses nothing." [ Lots of energy but wasted].
Line 6 -
"Thunder: twisting, twisting. Watching in terror. Exposed to dangers. Thunder: moving away from one's self and towards one's neighbour. No harm in this. Spouses have something to talk about." [A lot of, prior to release/break/collapse]

Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 21. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 21 as context.

The introduction of a context of enlightenment, of something 'new' will guarantee the emergence of a period of problem solving as the 'new' takes hold. Reciprocally an introduction of a context of problem solving will lead to the emergence of 'new' solutions.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 51 reflects an influence of 51 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 51 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 51.
