62 Preponderance of the Small
Portraying, Exaggerating, Acting

In a context of self-restraint we utilise (sudden) awareness.

"HSIAO KUO -

HSIAO : little, common, unimportant; adapting to what crosses your path; ability to move in harmonious relation to the vicissitudes of life;...
KUO : go beyond, pass by, pass over; excessive, transgress, error, fault."
ERANOS p647

"[With self-restraint comes awareness : Acting.] One uses excessive behaviour to show respect ; One uses excessive behaviour to mourn; One takes advantage of excessive behaviour to show moderation."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 62 an emphasis on detail and over exaggerated conduct is sometimes required by those in positions of influence to help maintain traditional perspectives. This emphasis helps to maintain the 'ideal' in the eyes of the people. However, these behaviours can be used to hide a weak individual in that they work as a facade and can be used as an excuse for delays in decision making.

In the image, moderation, respect, and mourning are usually acts manifesting a level of restraint. In this situation this behaviour is 'hammed up' (a context of guidance and trickary). Hexagram 62 is the specific expression of the characterstics mentioned in hexagram 42, Augmentation.

Oppositional Format : Hexagram 62 reflects the battle of ideologies, of traditions.

Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 62 is the opposite of hexagram 61 in that the exaggerations of 62 complement the inner sensitivity, the softening/yielding core of 61.

Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 62 is hexagram 54 (or 'how do I 54? - 62' - How do I expend energy? exaggerate traditions etc)

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Mountain reflects Filtration (through discernment). The trigram of Thunder reflects raw Production. The overall focus is on the exaggeration of something 'little' or 'raw' (a little point) as being important (of qualitative value).

62 is the goal of 55 (or 'how do I 62? - 55' How do I exaggerate traditions? Focus on diversity, on abundance and so 'overflow' with prose)

Extended Commentary

Referring to the Quality Matrix below, the raw context from which hexagram 62 derives is described by analogy with hexagram 56. Once within hexagram 62, base level is described by analogy with the general nature of hexagram 30 Guiding/Direction(ideology) in that hexagram 30 is linked to the bottom line of hexagram 62 and expresses the general focus on an ideology expressed in the form of a tradition. The development path of qualitative expression works up through the lines of hexagram 62 where at line 5 it is best expressed by analogy to hexagram 33 Retreat/Trick where the intent of the development is to draw people in. This need is finally transformed at the peak of the hexagram, line 6, into the expression of the use of exaggerations of traditions to integrate a culture.

Given the above Quality Matrix, where for 62 we move from bottom to top, so going beyond the static nature of 62 into analogies used for describing its dynamic expressions, so at least 62 can reflect over-exaggerations, as described by analogy to hexagram 55. At its best, 62 reflects the exaggerations of specifics to enforce standardisations - aka traditional processes; these reflected in the analogy to the over-exaggerated characteristics of hexagram 60.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1 -
"[In the beginning] one should avoid trying to fly." [Learn the rules of the game first]
Line 2 -
"[Getting higher than] one's grandfather. Meeting one's source(grandmother) but not reaching one's ruler. Meeting one's servant. Without fault." [Working the paths of refinement. Even the lowly (servant) work on refinement. One has success, but one is not capable of reaching the level of one's ruler.]
Line 3 -
"One does not protect oneself from excesses. Following this path may led to death (being killed). Danger." [One needs to be disuaded from this path, return]
Line 4 -
"No harm in this. One does not meet excesses. One is warned of the dangers of moving on. No advantage in perpetually testing times." [Excesses should at least be curbed (pruned) when met. Ignoring this is costly]
Line 5 -
"Dense clouds [excessive clouds] originating from the west, but no rain. A prince [pulls someone] out of [retirement]". [To make things work, we withdraw before we advance. Reconsider the position and then act. Dense clouds imply lots of potential but nothing is happening [not up to it]. Someone is needed to get things moving.]
Line 6 -
"[One claims] there are no more excesses to meet. That claim [leads to] total disaster." [One attempts to put on a facade of "everything's fine"- It isn't. Total ruin]
Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 56. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 56 as context.

By introducing the characteristics of hexagram 62 as context leads to the emergence of the characteristics of 56, namely a sense of loyalty. Reciprocally, introducing the characteristics of 56 will lead to the emergence of 'hamming up' expressions of loyalty as done in 62.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 27 reflects an influence of 62 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 62 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 62.

I have a question!
