32 Duration
Committing

In the context of cultivation we utilise awareness.

"HENG : continue in the same way and spirit; constant perpetual, regular; self-renewing; extend everywhere; the moon almost full" ERANOS p371

Image :

"[With cultivation comes awareness]. Thunder, Wind. Persevering (Constancy). One uses (permanency) rather than continuous change."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative Format : Hexagram 32 is the point of balance between the two main hexagrams of transition (51,57). We are as far away as possible from the moment of transition. We experience duration in a social context of an enduring relationship; the idea of commitment. Contextually, we develop from a raw sense of direction (14) that becomes seductive (44), leading to wholehearted commitment. Hexagram 32 is the general expression of the characteristics of hexagram 61, yielding/softening which reflects the particular aspects of making a commitment.

(The four hexagrams (51,32,42,57) deal with the cyclic nature of transitions. As influenced by their base trigrams).

Oppositional Format : Hexagram 32 is thunder against wind.

Structural Relationship (Being) : Hexagram 32 is the opposite of hexagram 42.

Temporal Relationship (Doing) : The goal of 32 is hexagram 55 (or 'how do I 55? - 32')

Five-Phase Relationship : The trigram of Wind reflects manufactured production, a need to cultivate. The trigram of Thunder reflects raw production, the 'new'. The overall focus is on commitment to production or more so to reproduction ('self-renewing').

32 is the goal of 34 (or 'how do I 32? - 34')

Extended Commentary

Referring to the Quality Matrix below, the raw context from which hexagram 32 derives is described by analogy with hexagram 50. Once within hexagram 32, base level is described by analogy with the general nature of hexagram 14 Active Directing in that hexagram 14 is linked to the bottom line of hexagram 32 and expresses the general concentration focus. The development path of qualitative expression works up through the lines of hexagram 32 where at line 5 it is best expressed by analogy to hexagram 44 Persuading/Seducing where the intent of the development is to persuade and so lead to a commitment. This 'persuasion' need is finally transformed at the peak of the hexagram, line 6, into the expression of absolute commitment.

Using the above Quality Matrix, we can, working bottom-up, identify the dynamic elements of 32 where the least it can do is described by analogy to hexagram 34, and the best it can do is described by analogy to an over-exaggerated nature of hexagram 03.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1
"Deep Duration. Testing . Danger. No direction advantageous. [At this time a deep commitment can be dangerous. Non-involvement in any direction is advised.]"
Line 2
"Troubles will disappear. [Once off the ground, our journey gets up steam]"
Line 3
"Not committing to one's 'Way' (tao) can lead to embarrassment. Testing times. Regret. [At this stage, to follow this path requires commitment despite any difficulties]"
Line 4
"The fields without wildlife. [to be committed to an ideal serves no purpose if it is in fact lifeless. Contemplate first.]."
Line 5
"Continued commitment to one's 'way' is being tested. [On reflection] It is advantageous just to follow [with one's heart] than to attempt to lead [with one's intellect]."
Line 6
"Boisterous of one's [level of] commitment leads to danger. [Commitment is a deep thing. It is expressed implicitly through one's acts and presence, rather than explicitly through boisterousness.]"
Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 50. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 50 as context.

The introduction of commitment as context will lead to the emergence of nurturing and transformation. Reciprocally a contextual emphasis on transformation will lead to the emergence of commitment.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 42 reflects an influence of 32 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 32 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 32.
