03 Difficulty at the Beginning; Sprouting
In a context of enlightenment, a new beginning, we utilise control.

"CHUN : begin or cause to grow; assemble, accumulate, bring under control; hoard possessions; establish a military camp; difficult, arduous. The ideogram: sprout piercing hard soil"ERANOS p114

"[With enlightenment comes overcoming(control)]. From out of the mist, an arousing power: Beginning Growth. One uses the laws to establish things."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : Hexagram 03 is where one meets difficulties as one starts a new task or introduces a new paradigm (rooted in an initial context of admiration and an hungering for anything); usually because we have found the present foundations (if any) unacceptable but still in force. However, there are still basic social foundations that we can use to help accomplish our task.

In the Fu Hsi arrangement, this hexagram is next to hexagram 42 Increase (order no. 36). 42 deals with the change from one level to the next. 03 (order no. 35) symbolizes the beginning of a level, the raw state eventually to become refined.

Oppositional format : Hexagram 03 reflects water against thunder; control against enlightenment.

Template/Persona format : Contractive Bounding in a context of Expansive Binding. The dynamic binding reflects a 'newness', a beginning within which we find attempts to control, to direct, this beginning (expressed in contractive bounding).

Five-Phase Relationship : The trigram of Thunder reflects the process of raw production (as reflected in a new sprout). The trigram of Water reflects consumption. Consumption of the 'raw' can be difficult.

Hexagram 03 is the general expression of the particular described in hexagram 56 (loyalty).

Goal of 03 - hexagram 08 (or 'how do I 08? - 03' - How do I unify? Sprout, work through new beginnings)

03 is the goal of 29 (or 'how do I 03? - 29' - How do I sprout, work through new beginnings? Through Containment and Control)

Extended Commentary

The raw context from which the situation develops is described by heaxagram 42. The raw nature of the base line is described by analogy to hexagram 20 Contemplating/Admiring. This general emphasis of focusing on something/someone is linked to the base line of hexagram 03. The development path moves up through the hexagram passing through line position 5 and its link to hexagram 27 Hungering where the hungering reflected and the attraction to anything to satisfy that hunger is the precursor to the characteristics described in hexagram 03.

Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 42. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 42 as context.

In general, introducing the characteristics of hexagram 03 as context leads to the expression of changing levels, of augmentation. Reciprocally introducing augmentation as context leads to the expression of the characteristics of sprouting, of 'new' beginnings and all of the problems that go with that process.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 40 reflects an influence of 03 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 03 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 03.
