39 Obstruction
Bypassing

In a context of self-restraint we utilise control.

"CHIEN : Walk lamely, proceed haltingly; weak-legged, afflicted, crooked; feeble, weak; unfortunate, difficult. The ideogram: foot and cold, impeded circulation in the feet."ERANOS p435

"[With self-restraint comes overcoming(Control) : Bypassing] One uses inner flexibility to help cultivate one's 'way'."

Class: Integrating

Commentary :

Cooperative format : In hexagram 39 one is blocked in one's path, but this blockage is from within. It is therefore best to try and find an alternative route - bypass to overcome rather than conflict. This may require changing one's self temporarily. Contextually, we combine rigid structure and selectivity into a situation of dealing with obstructions. There is also the intent of blocking the mindless flow of things and so establishing some structure.

Oppositional format : water against mountain.

Template/Persona format : Contractive Bounding in a context of Contractive Bonding.

Five-Phase Relationship : The trigram of Mountain reflects Filtration (through discernment). The trigram of Water reflects consumption. This reflects both blocking the flow (and so being discerning about the flow) as well as being blocked (and so getting around the blockages. Consumption, since it has an element of containment can act to obstruct - arterial blockage, too high cholesterol! etc)

Hexagram 39 is the specific form of hexagram 21

Goal of 39 - hexagram 60 (or 'how do I 60? - 39' How do I create standards? By blocking the mindless flow of things)

39 is the goal of 63 (or 'how do I 39? - 63' How do I block things? Through asserting begin/end points)

Extended Commentary

The raw context from which the situation derives is described by hexagram 53. The raw base line position is described through analogy with hexagram 37 Rigid Structuring. It passes through hexagram 52 Discernment before finding fullest expression in hexagram 39.

The Traditional Single Changing Line Comments:
Line 1
"Going leads to obstruction, Coming leads to praise. [One needs to get one's priorities in order]"
Line 2
"A king's servant deals with obstructions not of his making. [One's duty is to serve and disperse]"
Line 3
"Going leads to obstruction. Coming leads to the reverse." [Adopting a position of uniformity and order removes the obstruction]
Line 4
"Going leads to obstruction. Coming leads to continuity".[Concentration is preferred over movement.]
Line 5
"[In times of] Great obstruction friends come[join in]." [When an obstruction is really big, cut it down to size first - pruning]
Line 6
"Going leads to obstruction. Coming leads to maturity. Advantageous. Of benefit to see great people." [ Staying to help remove decay and corruption is better than leaving. If you leave, the obstructions go with you.]
Transformative methods

By introducing this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 53. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 53 as context.

Introducing a context of overcoming obstacles by bypassin them lead to the expression of gradual development. Reciprocally, gradual development as context will lead to the overcoming of obstructions.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 04 reflects an influence of 39 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 39 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 39.
