01 The Creative, Heaven
Assertion (Single-Mindedness, Self-contained, totalising)

In a context of perseverence we utilise singlemindedness.

"CH'IEN: spirit power, creative and destructive; unceasing forward motion; dynamic, enduring, untiring; firm, stable; heaven, soverign, father; also: dry-up, parched, exhausted, cleared away. The ideogram: sprouts or vapors rising from the ground and sunlight, both fecundating moisture and scortching drought." ERANOS p94

"[Perseverence doubled - single-mindedness]. Heaven moves continuously. using this fundamental power, one never needs to stop and rest."

Class: Differentiating

Commentary :

Hexagram 01 is both excessive but also inspirational in that filled with energy, the need for balance is achieved through continuous interaction with the outside, where each sensation is an energy release. This is an extreme state, but with controlled release of the pent-up forces it can be highly creative.

The outpouring of yang floods the surroundings such that there is only 'yang', with no differentiation of text/context etc. If unchanneled this expansive power will takeover and so drown-out difference, making everything 'same' but not a dull 'same', more a very refined, polished 'same' (and at times delusional). There is a sense of the eternal here reflected in the 'dark' elements of pure yang as we find in quantitative precision-oriented groups where there is a 'drive' to maintain eternal 'sameness' to a degree where 'difference' is immediately pounced upon.

At the level of the persona, individuals who have pure yang as their totem favour personal perfection; they are leaders more so than managers and so work at a local level, favouring the refinement of themselves and their weapon system into one 'total' force. They sharpen their skills with interactions with other like-skilled individuals, e.g. as Samurai with their sword. They play hard to hone their skills and in making things 'one' so they achieve balance.

In the IC+ distinctions of general/particular, Hexagram 01 is the particular form of hexagram 07

In the primary (Fu Hsi) sequence of the I Ching, hexagram 01 is the first of the octet that has heaven as the base trigram. As such it represents 'pure yang'. Within the octet hexagram 01 is paired with its complement, hexagram 11 where the action of 01 is tempered to being more biased to potentials; the tempering acts to contain the everflowing yang. At the level of the whole primary sequence, hexagram 01 is paired with its structural opposite, hexagram 02.

In the traditional (King Wen) sequence of the I Ching, hexagram 01 is the first of the octet that deals with unconditional purity of self. Within that octet it is complemented by hexagram 08 reflecting unconditional group purity. At the level of the whole traditional sequence hexagram 01 is paired with its qualitative opposite, hexagram 64.

In both sequences hexagram 01 is representative of the IC+ concept of expansive BLENDING.

Goal of 01 - hexagram 44 (or 'how do I 44? - 01')

Five-Phase Relationships : The trigram of Heaven reflects Exchange through competition, opposition.

01 is the goal of 02 (or 'how do I 01? - 02' How do I be singleminded? By being devoted but to oneself)

Extended Commentary

The qualitative differences within 'pure yang' are described by analogy by a list made-up of all of the hexagrams in a specific order, as we find in a histogram of colours. For hexagram 01 this list starts with the raw yang state best described by 43 (being 'pushy'), and the raw line context best described by hexagram 28 - Exceeding. (too much yang). Through refinement we pass through hexagram 34 - inspiring, before reaching the top of the list with the most refined representatio of hexagram 01.

Transformative methods

By introducing the characteristics of this hexagram as context, you can change a state described by any other hexagram into a state described by hexagram 43. To make a state associated with another hexagram transform into this state, introduce hexagram 43 as context.

It is important to remember that, when using transformative methods, the more lines requiring change, the more energy required when attempting to introduce a different context. It may therefore be of benefit to work on existing changing lines and achieve your goal in steps rather than attempt, for example, a six-line change all at once.

Context as Push

To 'go with the flow', any hexagram that is changing into hexagram 01 reflects an influence of 01 on that hexagram in that the 'flow' is in hexagram 01 and as such this reflects the need to adapt to that flow and so take-on the properties and methods of 01.
