The I Ching tells us about hexagram 48:
The I Ching is a language. Its 'letters' are in the form of images reflecting generic, holistic, organic, qualities of meaning. The set of images is finite and the language is at a level of being able to describe itself through reference to itself by the method of analogy (thus the I Ching is "autological"). This allows us to describe the details of a hexagram through a manipulation of logic and the use of analogy. The following thus describes the details of the current hexagram through analogy to each of the other hexagrams. The logic used is in interpretation of hexagrams as part/whole interactions - as such the following is like a hexagram's spectrum and so a 'parts list'.

- In the binary sequence hexagram 48 pairs with hexagram 57.
- This pairing reflects the generic focus on cultivation, on foundation setting, and becoming influencial.
Hexagram 48 focuses on setting-down a 'well' to serve as a source of nourishiment around which a collective can
form and as such focuses on an integrating nature. Hexagram 57 is more differentiating and more 'dynamic' as it
reflects moving to others to cultivate and become influencial. Hexagram 57, reflecting wind, focuses on eliciting
change through manipulation of context rather than text in that manipulation of context will force the text to
adapt and in doing so the focus avoids any direct confrontations re needs for change.
- In the binary sequence hexagram 48 opposes hexagram
21.
- At the LOCAL level we are dealing with an octet of hexagrams with WIND as base. Here the assocation is of
48 with 50 where the exaggerated sense of supplying nourishment through 'cooking' is reflected in a more balanced
format through the establishment of a 'well' of nourishment (requires less energy over the long run).
- In the traditional sequence hexagram 48 opposes hexagram 17.

- The generic properties of hexagram 48 reflect the mixing of the generic properties of hexagram
57 with the generic properties of hexagram 09.
- Combining a focus on cultivation, becoming influencial (57) with a focus on using small gains to stand upon
and so be noticed (09) is reflected in the general focus on foundation-setting reflected in hexagram 48.
- In the variations on a theme sequence, hexagram 48 complements hexagram 05.
- In this pairing, both hexagrams 05 and 48 reflect a focus on setting foundations, 05 through the use of
networking whilst waiting for an opportunity to express oneself, and 48 through the establishiment of a 'well'
that serves as foundational source of nourishment for a collective.
