10 Treading (A path)
In a context of self-reflection we utilise singlemindedness.

The mud from which 10 has emerged is best described by analogy to the under-stated qualities of hexagram 47, enclosing (forced).

In this pairing we see the conduct required in functioning in a hierarchic context, the need to clearly differentiate (10) one's actions associated with the overall need for self-reflection and intensity in expression (58). When we include concepts from five-phase theory, these two hexagrams reflect cooperative (top trigram of lake) and competitive (top trigram of heaven) exchange in a context of cooperative exchange (bottom trigram of lake). Thus hexagram 10 has a slightly more 'rigid' focus due to its competitive colouring, and so the need for discipline even if in a 'cooperative' context. On the other hand hexagram 58 is more integrating in focus and more cooperative, reflecting interactions with an 'audience' etc.

In any hierarchy it is important that everyone knows their place since the slightest 'anomoly' can cause problems.

In this pairing we see the focus on levelling-out in hexagram 15, where we reduce all highs and fill-in all lows, and so avoid any form of exaggeration, compared to the formal maintaining of highs and lows, and so a focus on hierarchy, in hexagram 10. A consequence of hierarchy is the need for everyone to 'know their place' in that the slightest movement 'away' from that place can be a threat to the overall structure. Thus with hexagram 10 we have a focus on treading, on conduct, following a path 'carefully' where the path reflects the bounds of one's realm (see the generic properties for 10 given below where one of the related hexagrams is hexagram 47).

At the LOCAL level in the binary sequence we here deal with a sequence of eight hexagrams with the trigram of LAKE as the base trigram. In this sequence hexagram 10 'opposes' hexagram 19 where in 19 the high/low relationship is 'softened' in that the low approach the high and the high defers to the low. More so, the sharp focus on hierarchy and so the association of 'correct' conduct, of knowing one's place in the high/low relationships, reflected in 10 is reflected in a more balanced format by the focus on mixing high and low (low approaches the high, high defers to the low) in 19 - the distinctions as such are not so 'severe' as in 10.

This pairing reflects the overall emphasis on hierarchic formats where in 10 the focus is on rigid maintaining of hierarchy and in 09 the focus is on building-up 'deeds', making small gains, that one can stand upon to be noticed and so be influencial, reflecting the support mechanisms required to get to, be at, the 'top' as well as the need to 'know one's place'.

GAIN:

10 : gain - through following a path; 10 treading comes out of a context described by hexagram 47 - forced enclosure

This pairing reflects issues of the discipline in maintaining hierarchy (10) vs the potental collapse of hierarchy due to too much diversity in expressions (55). In the general comments of 55 there is reference to abundance in the 'low' (thieves) etc as well as the 'high'.
The generic properties of hexagram 58 are self-reflection doubled and that means intensity, self-reflection is thus dual in form, as reflecting upon oneself but also as being a mirror for others to see themselves in you. These base properties are mixed with a sense of being 'penned-in' (generic characteristics of 47) and the result are the generic properties we associate with hexagram 10.
This pairing reflects compromise in the need for self-discipline expressed in the conduct required in hexagram 10, and the formal discipline imposed by a social legal system.
