Scalars, Vectors, Tensors, & The I Ching

In the continuing analysis of the methodologies we use in deriving meaning, In the IC+ work we have been able to identify relationships that seem to stem from the METHOD of deriving the trigrams and hexagrams of the I Ching.

In particular we have identified properties that stem from the use of recursion of the yin/yang dichotomy (or any dichotomy for that matter) where each level of recursion elicits a set of symbols representing qualities we can use to map reality. (this is isomorphic (identical in form, labels differ) to the more generic IDM process)

Focusing on the trigrams (where the patterns here discussed are easily applicable to all other levels as done to the hexagrams in ICMATRIX), the initial recursions of yin/yang takes us quickly to a level (2^3) of the eight trigrams which we can represent in binary digit formats, reading from left-to-right representing reading from base line to top line. The eight symbols are:

000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110, 111

These represent:

earth, mountain, water, wind, thunder, fire, lake, heaven.

These are all SCALAR expressions, the qualities only reflect magnitudes. To derive finer details we have to differentiate each of these scalars and in doing so we derive the VECTOR through a trigram from bottom to top and we do this by stepping through the binary digits changing each as we go (reflects the changing lines process - 2^3 gives us 8 possible expressions). Here are the eight vectors for the above scalars:

000, 100, 010, 110, 001, 101, 011, 111

001, 101, 011, 111, 000, 100, 010, 110

010, 110, 000, 100, 011, 111, 001, 101

100, 000, 110, 010, 101, 001, 111, 011

101, 001, 111, 011, 100, 000, 110, 010

110, 010, 100, 000, 111, 011, 101, 001

111, 011, 101, 001, 110, 010, 100, 000

What emerges from these vectors is a concept reflected in tensors, namely the quality of a particular line(s) expression, its response to a stimulus. This seems to be derived by swapping the last four elements of the vector with the first four, thus:

For 000 scalar

000, 100, 010, 110, 001, 101, 011, 111 (vector)
001, 101, 011, 111, 000, 100, 010, 110 (tensor concept)

What this does is map a trigram now serving as a source of analogy to the corresponding line patterns through the vector. Thus the 'raw' nature of trigram 000 is described by analogy to trigram 001, keeping still, mountain. The quality of the first line of 000 is described by analogy to trigram 101, the clinging, fire...

line 0 - 001 (general raw quality)
line 1 - 101 (rawest base line quality)
line 2 - 011
line 1 + 2 - 111
line 3 - 000 (pure, refined, static yin)
line 1 + 3 - 100 (base dynamic analogy)
line 2 + 3 - 010
line 1 + 2 + 3 - 110 ('best' expression of yin in a dynamic form)

What all of this 'says' is that the general scalar of yin, earth, the receptive, has its raw nature reflected in keeping still (self-restraining)

The next level of quality is made by analogy to the trigram of fire, the clinging. This focuses on exactly that - the NEED to cling to something/someone and so express oneself through that (covers the concept of seeking guidance/an ideology) If a stimulus is to this line the response is reflected in the general nature of earth + the analogy of fire etc.

The next level of quality is made by analogy to the trigram of wind, the gentle. It reflects cultivation and a developing influence.

The next level of quality is made by analogy to the trigram of yang, the creative. It reflects perseverence and the development of singlemindedness about the belief.

the next level of quality is made by analogy to the trigram of earth, the receptive. Here we have reached the 'pinnicle' of the quality of earth as a static form. ALL up we have:

(1) self-restraint to start.
(2) 'cling' to something/someone (belief etc) (line 1)
(3) cultivate that process. (line 2)
(4) become 'singleminded' about 'whatever' (line 1 + 2)
(5) you have reached the concept of 'earth' as an example of pure devotion and trust (line 3)

The next three qualities deal with 'transcending' the static, moving into the dynamic. As such the next level of quality is for line 1+3. Analogy here is to thunder, the arousing. This 'says' that at least one can (or can be) enlighten(ing, ed).

The next level of quality (2+3) is made by analogy to water, the abysmal (containment/control)

The final level of quality (1+2+3) reflects the 'best' perspective - reflection of the belief (expressions of 'love' 'joy' etc)

Here are the vector/tensor sets for the other scalars:
