John Collins came to Australia as a young man, probably attracted
by the lure of gold. which had been discovered in various part of the country during the 1850s. John is believed
to have been born in about 1837 at Folkestone, Kent. He was a gold digger at Araluen, NSW, when he married
Jane Quarme Nancarrow in 1863.
Jane had arrived in Australia in 1848 with her parents, Robert and
Mary Nancarrow, and sister Fanny, on the ship Thetis. Fanny and Jane were born in Grampound, Cornwall,
