“OAM recipients include Grace Margaret Goode, 86, who is internationally-recognised for creating more than 800 bromeliad hybrids at her Alexandra Headland home over the past 30 years.
The names of her hybrids, as diverse and colourful as the plants themselves, include Charm, One and Only, Amazing Grace (after the song) and Mandela, after South African human rights icon Nelson Mandela.
Mrs Goode has a special bromeliad called Joel, after her favourite nephew Joel Neil who died in a car accident in Brisbane several years ago.
''I wanted to name something after him because he was such a lovely lad.
I've got hybrids from Joel called Fond Memory and Unforgettable, because that's what he was.'' Mrs Goode said was very comfortable with the recognition for her lifetime of service to horticulture.
''I can't understand why people say they're humbled.
I feel proud and honoured to receive this award,'' she declared.”
