Neoregelia
|
The Neoregelia family
is one of the most popular Bromeliad group in Australia. They
are very easily cultivated, quick growing, dazzling varieties
and sizes. When the plant matures and is ready to flower,
they produce blushing or "hearts of fire". This
blushing is a startling and contrasting colour change to the
rosette's central leaves. Simultaneously this very colourful
and striking foliage lays symmetrically flat and all their
colours become more vibrant and exciting, at this time.
The very tinny flowers are almost insignificant,
as they just protrude from the large central bracts, at water
level and mostly below the foliage level, ready to be pollinated.
These multiple flowerings can last for several months, with
the blushing lasting long after the flowering has finished.
The Neoregelia family have broad shinny
leaves with various colours from soft lime greens to reds
and burgundy to black. Additionally they have patterns, spots,
stripes, bands, shading and blotches. They range in sizes
from a very tiny 5cm to more than 1 metre across in diameter.
Some have small spines on their leaf edges for protection
and others are almost smooth.

compacta
Neoregelia compacta is a very beautiful
green, yet extremely hardy species plant. The brilliant light
green leaves are surprisingly strong and tough, with excellent
growing characteristics.
The plants produce stolons or long arms to extend the position
of its pups or offshoots. These extensions will push up against
objects like trees or fences and gradually climb these vertical
supports.
When the plant is maturing, the rosette centre blushes into
an extremely brilliant crimson colour, which contrasts with
the green leaves. The small flowers are bluish and the bracts
are bright pinkish red.
Neoregelia compacta rosette grows 40 cm diameter and
30cm high, either attached to a tree, planted in the ground
or in a medium sized pot, with plenty of room to cluster.
